As the orange blossoms bloom and the warm sunshine slowly elbows out the chill of winter, sevillanos have exactly one thing in their minds: the Feria de Abril!
This annual week-long festival, which believe it or not started out years ago as a simple agricultural fair, is the highlight of Andalusia's cultural agenda and the culmination of everything that comes to mind when we think of Spain: swirling flamenco dresses, tasty wines and platters of tapas, bullfights, horse-drawn carriages, music and dancing, laughter and merry-making, and that ever sevillano passion for living life to its fullest. Needless to say, there is absolutely no better time to experience Seville!
The activities of the Feria de Abril are divided into two places, one on each side of the Guadalquivir River. The first is the official fairgrounds, a huge expanse of land filled with over a thousand striped tents called casetas. These casetas, which families and friends lovingly decorate as if it were part of their own home, have a few indispensable features: an area for dancing sevillanas (like flamenco), a bar where you can get tapas and drinks, and tables and chairs where you can take a break between all the dancing! Located on the western bank of the river and in the outskirts of the Los Remedios district, just follow the hordes and look for the entrance, a huge gateway covered in thousands of tiny lightbulbs. Believe it or not, a brand new Feria gateway is designed and built every year!
On the eastern bank of the river is the famed Maestranza bullring, one of Spain's finest and home to the second major part of the Feria de Abril: top-notch bullfights! Each afternoon, crowds of curious tourists and bullfighting aficionados alike pack the stands and welcome the world's most prolific bullfighters, who never turn down the elite invitation to perform during the Feria de Abril. Get your tickets quickly, as there's never an empty seat in the house!
